Be Prepared

I’ve been preparing myself to go back to school. Oh yes. It’s possible “to study” to study folks.

Some quick google research on “becoming a journalist” turned up the following from Columbia’s Graduate Journalism webpage (FYI I’m not going to Columbia.. just partaking in their online resources!):

Frequently Asked Questions: Prepping for J-School — and a Career

Anonymous asks:

What steps can a prospective student take prior to attending Columbia’s Graduate School of Journalism?

(Oh, well I’m glad you asked, Anonymous. I had the same question myself. This is gonna be good.)

“Study websites in which you have an interest, watch and listen to a broad range of TV and radio newscasts, follow key bloggers and news media websites and develop story ideas that fit those companies.  Your writing should be journalistic – meaning stories that are thoroughly reported – and not just a collection of essays and opinion pieces on blogs. Employers put little stock in opinion writing by rookies and instead want to see work that shows you can report with complexity and write with precision, concisely and with authority.

That’s basically about as far as I got.Your writing should be journalistic – meaning stories that are thoroughly reported – and not just a collection of essays and opinion pieces on blogs.

Oh but you mean I”m not gonna get by on my rants on owning a house, my opinion pieces on illegal immigration on or this very sentimental piece on the Fall, ALL of which I have self-published?!

Shit.

Suddenly this “be prepared” business is starting to sound a lot like Scar’s solo from the Lion King. Ominous and foreboding:
