Ok folks we’re in it for the long haul. The rosy winter glow is about to run out given that Christmas and NY’s have passed by. Now we just have to sit back and ride out the darkness until we discover we’ve made it to the other side. In the meantime, it can’t hurt to spice things up a bit. I suggest we try and do as the traders of the orient did, and make spice our life. Unwarranted advice is one of the things I do best in life so please don’t take it away from me.
Spices are an amazing way to add flavour without fat and they can help you cut back on salt. If that’s not enough for you they also help fight cancer, reduce swelling, inflammation and water retention, moodiness, and pain. If that’s still not enough, there are some spices which can help you get your mojo on in the bedroom…. which is awesome because it can help spice things up in two senses if ya know what I mean. (I’m guessing you know what I mean.)
Most spices have a low toxicity which means even in larger quantities they are ok, but as with everything in life, moderation is key. For instance I’m thinking of an old episode of Ali Mcbeal where a lady ate too many carrots because she wanted to improve her eyesight and she ended up turning her skin orange. This is a really good example of too much of a good thing. (And yes, carotenosis is a real thing – not just a Hollywood story.) But as usual I digress. We’re talking spices, not carrots. If I’ve piqued your interest, a short list with recipe suggestions below.
Turmeric: It’s anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-cancer….. anti-smoking, so pretty much anti everything really (anti in the good sense of course). Turmeric is a derivative of the ginger root so I basically call it family as any ginger is a friend of mine.
How it helps: aside from getting rid of all the toxins, turmeric makes the stomach exert gatroprotective properties (read: it helps you digest things more easily by keeping the good bacteria and protecting you from the bad.) And if that wasn’t good enough studies have proven that turmeric has direct anti tumor results on types of skin cancer. I’m fond of the idea that it can help me fight colds.
Cayenne Pepper: improves circulation. topically helps with frostbite. rebuilds blood cells. lowers cholesterol. removes toxins from the bloodstream. anti-fungal. Topical neuropathy pain-killer.
shall I go on?
improves overall heart health. Insect repellent. Equalizes blood pressure. shrinks hemorrhoids. heals gall bladder. Reverses prostate cancer cells. re-builds stomach tissues. heals stomach ulcers. diuretic. eliminates built-up fecal matter in the intestines.
They should just put this stuff in the water supply. End of Story.
OR: Sprinkle it on cooked veggies like broccoli or carrots
Cinnamon: Feeling a cold coming on? Bacteria on every surface in the bus on the way to work this morning? Tooth ache, headache, arthritis pain or bad breath? High blood sugar? Cinnamon was the hardest word I ever learned to pronounce but it’s the easiest spice to just slip into your coffee/tea on a daily basis. If you are diabetic make sure you check with your doctor before taking cinnamon supplements as they are that effective in altering your blood sugar and it could interfere with your insulin intake.
Ginger: Ginger is a proven natural aphrodisiacs which makes this herb one of the coolest, suave kids at school. Forget what you’ve heard about stigma and kick a ginger day. You’ll want to kick yourself for not introducing it into your daily diet sooner.
The moral of the story? We could all use a little spice in our life.
